Freelance Health Writers
LifeWire, an online content startup from The New York Times Company, is seeking freelance health writers to create service-oriented, informative articles on cancer, cholesterol, heart disease and other topics.
If you’re a fast, accurate and compelling writer who can consistently meet tight deadlines, you’re halfway there. If you have a health/medical background, experience writing about any of the subjects mentioned above, strong research and reporting skills (online and off), contact us.
Responsibilities:
Write up to four articles per week, 500 to 800 words in length, on one or more of the aforementioned topics for top-ranked online publisher
Use reputable medical journals, government and institutional Web sites for research and sourcing
Use MLA style to organize and list sources for publication
Identify and interview experts and review supporting materials when necessary
Ensure accuracy of content created
Use Web-based publishing tool to upload content to our database
Receive assignments from LifeWire editors and suggest articles and projects for their consideration
Requirements:
At least three to five years experience as a freelance or full-time journalist covering health and medical topics for a consumer-oriented or professional publication. Advertising and promotional copywriting is not acceptable.
Ability to write quickly, accurately and with a distinctive voice
Willingness to rewrite/revise articles prior to publication, based on input from editors and medical review board
Obsession with hitting deadlines and getting the facts right
Sophisticated understanding of how to find news and information online and off
BA in Journalism, communications, or English preferred. Medical degree a plus, although not required
Knack for handling multiple assignments and learning new topics quickly
Strong computer skills including experience using online publishing tools and instant messenger
