Work at Home Super Smart Windows SysAdmin-SQL Server DBA

Note: This is a work-from-home-office position.  You can be located anywhere in the world, provided you have a properly equipped home office from which to work.

Are you a super Windows Systems Administrator / SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) with expertise in administrating Internet Information Services (IIS) and SQL Server? Do you have dreams in SQL?  Are you looking for a new challenge with a fast-growing company that this year made both the Inc. 5000 list and the Software 500 list?

JangoMail (www.jangomail.com) is seeking a full time, detail-oriented and experienced Windows Systems Administrator / SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) to join our small, nimble, unique, and fun team. JangoMail is a Dayton, Ohio based highly profitable, rapidly growing and successful web-based email marketing system that allows businesses to create, send, and track email campaigns. JangoMail was launched in the fall of 2001 and has over 1,800 customers worldwide varying in size and industry. JangoMail is strictly opt-in and does not allow the use of purchased, rented or harvested lists with our system.

The Systems Administrator will be responsible for maintaining all of JangoMail's servers, including administering our SQL Server databases, administering our SMTP sending servers, and configuring our IIS servers.  The Systems Administrator will also oversee the daily operation of the JangoMail engine and take appropriate measures when a problem is discovered, such as re-prioritizing a client's email campaign via a SQL command when a client complains of delays.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Managing our core servers (database server, web server, corporate email server) and our 40 SMTP sending servers. All servers are Windows 2003 Standard and Enterprise editions.
  • Managing our Domain Name Server infrastructure, which is currently a third party ASP service.
  • Recommending hardware configurations, and researching pricing and options when new equipment is needed.
  • Administering our SQL Server 2005 databases.  Expertise in the SQL language is a must, and expertise with backup/restore/table indexing/general maintenance procedures an absolute must.  This job will be part DBA and part systems administrator.
  • Administering the JangoMail application using our internal web-based tools.  For example, a customer's List Import job needs to be prioritized above other Import jobs...write the SQL to do that.  Or, kill a customer's email campaign immediately, and then report back to the customer as to how many email messages were sent before the kill.
  • Write custom SQL scripts or generate custom reports from the database as requested by clients
  • Making sure all servers are patched, up to date, performing optimally, and error free
  • Monitor performance of servers, storage systems, and troubleshoot bottlenecks and recommend solutions to correct performance issues

EXAMPLES OF DAY TO DAY TASKS AND PROBLEM SCENARIOS

  • All three SMTP sending servers at hosting company X have gone down.  Re-route the affected clients' emails through different servers, and contact the hosting company to get the servers back online.
  • The CPU on the core SQL Server is pegged at 100%.  Determine why.
  • The JangoMail system is generally running slow.  Run a SQL Profiler trace to determine if there are any problem queries with improper indexing.
  • A core server is running out of disk space.  Research options to add more storage capacity to our existing EMC SAN.
  • The core JangoMail web server has had a hardware failure.  Manually failover to our backup server, and contact Dell to resolve the hardware issue on the primary server.
  • A client is complaining that his email campaign has been sitting in the queue for 30 minutes, and it's urgent that the email go out now.  Execute a SQL command to re-prioritize that client's email campaign.
  • A client has requested a dedicated email sending server.  Contact one of our hosting providers, make the purchase, and configure the new Windows 2003 server with our SMTP sending software.
  • Write a custom SQL script to monitor campaigns that are over 15 minutes delayed, and email a report to all staff when the campaigns are 15 minutes delayed.
  • A client is unable to export his email list using the JangoMail export feature because the list is over 1 million addresses.  Manually generate the report using SQL Server's Management Studio, place the file on our FTP server, and inform the client that the file's ready for download.
  • Setup mirroring between our two SQL Server 2005 instances.
  • Write SQL Server stored procedures to select/delete/update data in tables.
  • We need to upgrade our Windows Server 2003 Standard servers to Windows Server 2003 Enterprise edition.  Research the pricing options, find a vendor, make the purchase, inform our customers of the planned downtime, and then coordinate the upgrade.
  • Re-compile a Visual Basic application after our developer made some changes, and deploy the new EXE to production.

  • Strong work history and references
  • Knowledge of the SMTP protocol and the individual SMTP commands
  • Strong experience as a Database Administrator (DBA) in SQL Server 2005
