working at home-Things to Consider

When making the decision to Work At Home there are plenty of factors to consider before making the move. Here is a list of the top ten things you need to think about or have in place before making the transition:

How will working at home affect you financially? Do you have the resources to cover any transition period you might face? These are important questions that must be explored and answered well before you leave your out of the house job.

If you are moving to freelancing from a steady job do you have freelance jobs already lined up and if so, how long will they last before you need to replenish your "supply"? It will be to your advantage to keep up to date on new virtual jobs that become available so as you finish projects you can have new ones lined up.

Do you have everything in place to be able to perform your job duties efficiently and within a certain time frame? Is your schedule conducive to completing your work? How about your work area and your equipment, software, etc.

Have you thought about how you need to schedule your day in order to be sure you can accomplish all the tasks you need to finish for your job? If you have children to get off to school in the morning, chores to be done and errands to run, you still need to be available for work at some point.

  1. Do you have children present in the home during the day, and if so, how will you handle working around their needs?
  2. How will you be handling possible interruptions from children, spouses and others? Will you need to establish household rules in regards to interruptions while you are working?
  3. Do you have an area of your home that serves solely as your office space? Do you need to establish one? It is much easier to get projects finished if you have your own work area that is essentially your office. This means a place for your office equipment, your desk, calendar and other needs. This probably should not be the kitchen table.
  4. Have you thoroughly considered what type of virtual work you are interested in doing? What talents and skills do you have that easily translate into a virtual job?
  5. Have you located sources of virtual jobs?
  6. Are you self-directed and do you work well independently? This is extremely important if you wish to work from home.

The work at home life offers many advantages to those who are well suited to it. The above list of items should be considered and answered carefully before you take the plunge. Making sure you are prepared will smooth the transition and help to create a wonderful rewarding new way of working. Be sure to take a look at all the articles and information offered on the Virtual Vocations website to help you prepare for, and be successful at working at home.
