My Friend the Fridge

There it sits – big, shiny, and full of my favorite things to eat.  They are all available instantly and only one microwave minute from being ready to eat.  Our past relationship has always been one of convenience – putting things in, taking things out, storing leftovers.  Very handy but not one I ever gave much thought to other than giving it a regular cleaning once a month.  But now, I realize the danger.  As a WAHM it is just the Fridge and I in the house, alone. All day.

It’s the moments between finishing this job and starting that job on my task list that appear to leave me vulnerable to its siren call.  Turning off the TV was a great help in the transition of being at home and not wasting time.  My friend the Fridge is much more insidious – always ready to be opened, always bright and cheerful, and always willing to share.

So there we are… too many calories and too much food availability for this WAHM.  After a lot of research, I realized we must make some food rules in order to get the best out of our relationship.  And no, it is not starting on Sunday or the first of the next month so today is our moment of truth!

Rule number 1 – All left-overs must be in containers or covered.  Left-overs are for meals not snacks.

Rule number 2 -  The food pyramid is our friend and it is not the enemy.  We will use the lower end of the scale of servings because we it helps us to be healthy. We will measure and eat one serving of whatever our heart desires.

Rule number 3 – We must sit down at the kitchen/dining room table to eat or drink anything.  We cannot read, watch TV, or do any multi-tasking.  If it is in our mouth we must pay attention to every single bite every time.

Rule number 4 – All food must be on a plate, no direct from the jar into our mouth finger foods.  Even our favorite dill pickles!

Rule number 5 -  Every bite of food we consume is what we really, really, really want! Not just what is handy and available

Rule number 6 – Take a multi-vitamin every day for your inner beauty, and drink a lot of water.  It fills us up, plumps up our skin (less wrinkles), and makes less room for junk.

We must teach our friend the Fridge who is the boss.  So open those doors when you say it’s time and not when it speaks to you as you pass it by!
