Making That Switch
For the past 20 years, I worked in an office setting. Every morning, I would wake up and complete my morning routine. Then, I would drive to my job. When I returned home from my office job, I focused on my responsibilities at home. Now, I am working at home (WAH) and find myself in a different world. I still wake up and complete my morning routine. However, there is not a need to drive my car to the basement. I walk done the stairs and I am there. The same is true upon returning from work. I walk up the stairs and immediately start my home life. Now, I am sure you are thinking, “What is so bad about that?” There is not anything wrong with it. However, there is a component of the office setting that I miss from time to time. I miss the drive to and from work. Do not get me wrong, I do not miss actually “driving”. I miss the time I spent alone in the car. I used this time to switch my hat from a mom/wife to an employee and vice versa on my drive home. I enjoyed the twenty minutes to put aside the responsibilities of one task and prepare myself for the upcoming task. In a WAH position, I only have the time that it takes to walk the basement stairs. In order to continue to enjoy a WAH position, I must find another way to make that switch. A good suggestion is to get to my desk a few minutes early and visit my favorite websites. On the other hand, after I shut down my computer, I could sit at my desk and scrapbook a few pictures. Now, who would not want to do that at the end of the day?
