Go with the Flow
So you have determined your motivation for working at home or seeking a virtual employment position and have begun your search to locate the right work at home (WAH) job. Now jump into that current and go with the flow! Not the traditional work flow you may have experienced “out there” – and certainly not the dysfunctional type spoofed in Dilbert cartoons or The Office on TV – but rather the growing flow of people going home to work. Whatever your reason is for seeking work at home employment, you will not be that lone fish swimming against the tide – you will instead notice the tide and the flow turning, as people seek viable solutions to less than satisfying work situations. The increase in lay-offs, downsizing, and business closures is also sending more people into the WAH job market.
Therefore, even as you count yourself as a member of this new breed of workers, you will also need to distinguish yourself from the crowd. This is the second category of ‘going with the flow’ – the individual motivators that help you to consistently put forth your best effort. Evaluate yourself and your skills to determine your own ability to produce a consistent flow of work. Again, carefully consider the type of work you want to do to ensure that it will aid rather than impede your work flow. As mentioned in a previous article, for example, if you have little ones at home, jobs requiring phone work are likely not suitable for you as you will not be able to guarantee a quiet ‘office’ environment whenever you need it. Instead, jobs which can be performed on the computer may be most appropriate.
Whatever you choose for your WAH job or virtual employment, make sure it is a good fit for you and your family. Set up your WAH space, make it visually appealing, play inspirational or invigorating music, and try to keep THAT space clearly separate from your home, if at all possible. (More about this in future articles!) These simple steps can help you maintain your own personal work flow in a consistent manner. After all, once you learn to go with the flow – you will be able to get growing!
