Too Much STUFF !
If you have ever had to move an entire household of belongings – or moved everything out of a room in order to paint it or do a thorough cleaning – then you know the definition of ‘too much stuff.’ The majority of people tend to resemble ‘pack rats’ – hanging on to everything ‘just in case.’ After all, you just never know when you might need all that STUFF you have been putting aside and saving for years!
The trouble with this line of thinking is that you eventually run out of room for all your stuff. Not only that, you decrease your inhabitable space and working space, as too much stuff piles up around you. Unless you are one of those impossibly neat people, who really does not understand this topic, nor why it is even a struggle for many people … try this very revealing little task: take some pictures of your workspace, as well as other rooms in your house. Make sure you get several angles, panning the rooms. After you get all the pictures you need, get the film developed right away, or upload your pictures, if you are fortunate enough to have a digital camera.
Next, either spread the photos out on your desk (if you have room!) – or bring them up on your computer screen. Take a good look – what is the first thing your eyes are drawn to or you focus on immediately? If you are like most people – the answer is ALL THAT STUFF! Your attention is distracted by all that clutter in the background of every picture. Instead of seeing that nice oak desk and new high speed computer, for instance, you are more likely to see stacks of paper, piles of books, a coffee mug or two, breakfast and lunch dishes (maybe supper, too?), mail … well, you get the idea.
So now what? Well, obviously it is way past time to come up with a solution to “de-clutter” this mess … just a forewarning: de-cluttering usually leads to muttering!!
