WHYAre You Doing It?
Yes, once you have determined that you want to work at home and are willing to make the necessary arrangements to do so, the next step to ponder is WHY you have chosen to explore this unconventional type of job or career option. Of course, in the present economy, there is an influx of people seeking work at home positions. The idea of becoming part of an at home work force may not be nearly as ‘unconventional’ as formerly believed!
Let’s explore some common as well as relatively recent reasons why people choose to work at home:
Want to be there for the kids – a noble and unselfish reason, and often espoused by Moms with young children or young teens who need parental guidance, and you want them to know you better than the child care provider
Tired of the commute – let’s face it, after awhile, you just get tired of traveling to and from work, or making any of the additional trips required by your job
Too expensive – again, a valid concern in these days of rising gas prices and tolls
Work environment – stressful, unhealthy, negative in oh so many ways
Co-workers – sometimes you really do have personality clashes and just can’t get along with certain people
Boss – unappreciative, lack of compassion, sky high expectations
Want to be your own boss – that’s it, you have had enough, and don’t want to work for anyone else any more
Want to do what you love and love what you do – you are convinced that you would be far more productive and satisfied if you could just do what you love for a career, because then you will love what you do, rather than hate it
Need room to develop your skills – you have skills as yet untapped and just want to make use of them, whether through more schooling or training, or simply doing what you love to do
Lay-offs or forced unemployment - this is probably one of the most recent reasons, as the economy takes a nose dive and people find themselves without work ‘out there’
When all is said and done, regardless of the reasons, an increasing number of people are choosing to ‘come home’ to work. Of course, a related consideration as you seek a work at home position is to honestly evaluate if you have the necessary skills and character traits to successfully work at home. Watch for the next article in this series to further explore the question of skills.
