Dedicated Work Area: Many employers require a set area in your home that is quiet and organized for completing the work they assign. Even if your employer does not require it, having a dedicated work area is essential to effectively work from home. An ideal work space would be an area or room with a functional desk and filing cabinet, shelves and other office items that are within easy reach. However, many of us that work from home do not have additional rooms to use for an office. A filing cabinet or even book shelf that is used solely for your documents and supplies for work can still achieve the goal of space management.
Time Management: When working at home, one area that may be difficult to organize is our time. Between family, household and working demands, time seems to fly by. Sitting down with your family members and organizing your time by scheduling can greatly reduce the pressure of when and how you are going to accomplish all the tasks that are demanded of you. Family members will also know when you are ‘working’ and when you will be available to them.
Reduce Stress: Stress reduction can increase your ability to stay organized! Imagine how much more time you would have if you weren’t worrying about how you are going to get things done, what you will have for dinner, and when you are going to clean the house! If you are working from home, it is essential that you take time for yourself to help relieve the stress that inevitably comes from trying to ‘do it all’. Exercising is a great stress relief, deep breathing and just taking a walk outside for 15 minutes is a great way to take a break and relieve pressure. Reducing the stress will clear your mind and help you get back to work and feel more in control of your time and the tasks you need to accomplish.
Organization is an essential part of being successful in your work-at-home career. Be sure to organize your work area so you can easily find what you need, consider how you will use your time each day, and do something for yourself once in a while!
