General Work at Home Terms
When you are first introduced to the idea of working from home, it can quickly become confusing trying to figure out all of the different terms that are used in describing work-at-home employment positions, home office equipment and general abbreviations that are used in the ‘virtual’ world.

| Commissions | Payment that is based on sales |
| Computer Applications | Subclass of computer software – what the computer does as a result of the software |
| Content Writer | Contributes articles to ezines & web journals |
| Cover Letter | An introductory letter sent with a resume that indicates an applicants interest in a job and summarizes skills and requirements |
| Transcription of information from the original source to machine readable form | |
| Database Creation | Collecting records or data and structuring the data into logical, usable form |
| Dial Up | Internet connection that uses analog signal with conventional telephone lines |
| DSL Internet | High speed digital telecommunications over existing telephone line |
| Faxing | Transferring copies of documents over telephone network using a fax machine |
| High Speed Internet | DSL, Cable internet or T1 internet with speeds over 128 kbps |
| KPM | Keys per minute |
| References | Present or previous employers or other professional associates that would be able to vouch for an applicant’s employment experience, skills and demeanor |
| Resume’ | A document that outlines work history, skills and education for presentation to a potential employer |
| Scam | Uses the internet to fraudulently advertise services and goods, or otherwise con a user into sending money or participating in illegal activity |
| Scanning | Used to copy documents digitally for digital storage |
| Software | Package of programs that enables a computer to perform certain tasks |
| SPM | Strokes per minute |
| Telecommuting | Working from a remote location using computers, phone, fax, and internet to perform work |
| Unlimited Long Distance | Long distance plan that offers unlimited access to domestic long distance services for a flat monthly fee |
| A worker who works for businesses over the internet | |
| Virtual Office | A service that is offered which allows clients to use a prestigious office address and professional reception service, without renting a physical office |
| VOIP | Voice Over Internet Provider - this is telephone service that utilizes an internet connect rather than conventional telephone service. |
| WAHM | Work at Home Mom |
| Wireless Internet | Radio Frequency based service that provides internet access |
| WPM | Words per minute |
| Telecommuter | The act of working from a remote location, usually one's home |
| Search Engine | Helps users find web pages with information on a given subject |
| Web Browser | Software application that enables a user to display and interact with text, images and other information on a web page |
