Back Up Your Data!
Has your computer ever lost its data? This is not only frustrating, but if your data is work related, it can be downright disastrous! That's why it is extremely important to know the different methods of backing up your data and saving it safely, and choosing the right method for you. There are a few different ways to back up, and all are convenient and easy. You just have to pick which one is best for you.
1) External Hard Drive
Backing up your data to an external hard drive is a fairly inexpensive back up solution. External hard drives cost very little per gigabyte of space, and copying data is not difficult. Hard drives don't come without problems, though. They can break down for no apparent reason and are susceptible to corruption. Still, they are an OK choice because of low cost and ease of use.
2) CD or DVD
If your PC has a CD or DVD writer, and most do, you can save data by burning it onto a CD or DVD. It's easy to learn how to do this, and the cost is low to buy CD or DVDs.
3) Flash Drive (also called Thumb Drive)
These handy little devices plug right into the USB port on your computer and can save up to 1 GB of data depending on what capacity you buy. They are small, portable, rewritable and seem to be pretty durable as well. The disadvantage is that they don't hold as much data as other forms of back up technology.
4) FTP
FTP (file transfer protocol) is an online service that allows you to upload your data to a secure server. The secure server is just that - a server that is dedicated to storing data from all over in a secure environment. The data on the server is usually backed up as a secondary means of security.
You may never loose your data due to hard drive failure or other computer disaster, but when you are dealing with files and documents that would take time to reproduce, or may be impossible to reproduce, backing up makes sense. Speak with your virtual employer about which method of backing up data they prefer.
