A Virtual Vocation as a Second Source of Income
With the virtual job market exploding and the number of full time, part time and freelance jobs available, virtual work is an obvious choice for those who are looking to supplement their regular income. You may have a full time job where you work out of the home, and you may be very happy with it, and the interaction with the outside world. Maybe you enjoy the commute as a time for thinking and planning and singing with the radio. If so, that's great! But if you're in the market for a second source of income to pad you savings account or remodel the bedroom, part time or freelance virtual work might be just the ticket. If you have computer, office, or writing skills, you can easily find lots of virtual jobs. Other areas that are in demand are photographers, consultants, telemarketers and researchers. The list doesn't stop there. So many skills can be translated into virtual work.
If you are seriously interested in working virtually to make some extra money, here's what you need to know. First, part time jobs may be long-term jobs. This means that if you are looking only to work for a couple months to get some extra holiday cash together, make certain any job you take is not long term. It wouldn't be fair to your virtual employer unless they understood upfront that you weren't planning to be with them for more than a short period. Freelancing is more geared toward making extra money without being tied to a long-term job or having responsibility beyond the project at hand, but is less stable and more unpredictable. Still, if you don't intend to be working an extra job long term, freelancing is the way to go.
What is needed to find, get and keep (if you want to) a virtual second source of income? In terms of "things", you must have a good computer, Internet access (high speed is desirable, and sometimes required), and a phone. Depending on the job, you might need certain types of software, Skype, fax and scanning abilities. Skills that you need are obviously dependent upon the job you are seeking, but you should be sure you are capable of handling what is required. Additionally, because this is a second job, you need to be certain you really do have the time and dedication to devote to this job. If you commit to doing a project on a freelance basis, or commit yourself to a part-time position, you have to be able to follow through.
Virtual work is ideal for those seeking to add a bit of extra money to their income, while keeping their regular job. Do your homework, be sure you have the dedication it will take, and enjoy your extra earnings!
