How To Be A Good Freelancer
For many, freelancing is the most desirable employment situation to be found. It offers variety and the opportunity to hone skills in many different areas. Freelancers can pick and choose when they work, by taking on or refusing projects, and can decide how much they work. Certainly, financial issues play a role, but the freelancer has a great deal of freedom to create their own work situation and boundaries.
To be successful at freelancing, one must have a certain set of skills and be willing to take on many roles. If a person is willing to be diligent with all of them, success will follow.
A freelancer must be flexible. Being able to ride the tides of lots of work to not much at all is essential. Of course, the ideal situation is always to have just enough work so you don't get overwhelmed, but you're making money. It doesn't always happen like that. Flexibility also pertains to the jobs you are doing. If you really enjoy a certain type of freelancing, but can't always get those particular jobs, are you willing to do something else?
A freelancer must be good with his/her finances. This goes along with flexibility and the feast or famine problem that all freelancers run into on occasion. It's important to live within your means and stick to a workable budget. A bit of savings or an alternative form of income to get through moments when you are waiting for the next gig is helpful.
A freelancer must be his/her own advertising department. Depending on your field, a website and samples of your work should be available to potential employers. Business cards, brochures, flyers, and even advertisements in magazines related to your type of work can help. Don’t forget word of mouth. Make sure those you work for are very happy with you and that they tell their associates about you as well. Also, remember the value of good old-fashioned networking.
A freelancer must be his/her own boss. No one is going to do it for you. When that deadline is approaching, you have to be able to focus and stay motivated.
As satisfying as freelancing is, it's extremely important not to underestimate the amount of work and dedication it will entail. Be flexible and have a plan, get your name out there and make sure you keep yourself on task. If you can do these things, success will follow.
