The Golden Rules of Business

We've all heard of The Golden Rule. In different parts of the world, it might be expressed slightly differently, but all cultures and religions have their version, as do most people. We all just want to be treated with respect, whether at home, at work or within society. How can the professional translate this idea into work, even virtual work? It's easy if we just remember that at work, as in life, it's important to treat others just as we wish to be treated.

By treating your employers, customers and even virtual co-workers with respect and courtesy, you will build good strong relationships and even friendships. Your reputation as a considerate person will most likely make you a better candidate for future jobs. What can you do to practice The Golden Rule in your business relationships? Here are seven tips:

1) Always use the first name of the person you are communicating with when greeting them, even in an email. Or if you think they prefer, call them Mr., Ms. or Mrs. So and So. This is a common courtesy that everyone appreciates.

2) Always maintain a friendly, courteous tone with others.

3) Return phone calls and answer emails as soon as possible. Even if you don't have all the answers or information together that the caller is in need of. Explain what you are doing to get the information to him or her and let them know when you will be communicating with them again. This is a common courtesy that seems to be neglected all too often.

4) When emailing, do not type in all caps. This is considered to be quite rude. Likewise with typing all lower case. Take time to make your email communications readable.

5) Strive to stay within time frames and meet deadlines that you have agreed to. If you are unable to meet a deadline, communicate this information immediately and do your best to complete the work as quickly as possible.

6) If you have a problem with an employer, make efforts to discuss it with them in a calm, sincere manner and offer ways to better work together.

7) Always take time to say thank you.

Developing and maintaining relationships is an important part of business, virtual or in person. Don't forget to follow The Golden Rule in your business dealings and you will enjoy added success.
