8 Easy Ways to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Edited May 5, 2014

Cinco de Mayo is here! How will you celebrate?

Cinco de Mayo

May 5 (Cinco de Mayo) commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over a much larger and better trained French force at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo observations can be traced back to the start of the Civil War when Mexican-American communities first started celebrating the day.

Today, Cinco de Mayo is observed nationwide as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Typical outdoor festivities include parades, mariachi performances and street festivals. If you’re looking for another way to celebrate, here are eight additional ideas:

8 Easy Ways to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

1. Make paper flowers. Kids of all ages will enjoy making this easy craft that only requires tissue paper, a stapler and scissors. Download some mariachi music and gather round the kitchen table, the fun is about to begin. If you need a refresher, check out 100 Layer Cake for step-by-step instructions.

2. Party with a piñata. There’s no denying a piñata will drive kids wild, but it’s also an adult pleaser. Why should the little ones have all the fun? Most craft stores and large discount chains sell piñatas, or if you’re feeling crafty you can make a simple one in less time it takes to say la cucaracha (well almost).

3. Have a scavenger hunt. Perfect for as a neighborhood family event or an adult party, you can’t go wrong with a scavenger hunt. Have participants “find” Mexican themed items such as a Sombrero, cactus, a can of tamales, a bottle of hot sauce, or a pair of maracas. Give the adult winner a Mexican themed prize like a shot glass. Award the kids the first crack at breaking open a piñata.

4. Host a cocktail hour. Hosting a full-blown Mexican themed party is fun, but it’s also a lot of work. Instead of throwing a big party, gather a few friends and enjoy a Mexican cocktail hour that serves up a variety of margaritas, including non-alcoholic ones.

We suggest making a classic margarita and a punchy pomegranate margarita for starters. For an appetizer, serve individual portions of crowd pleasing seven layer dip.

5. Bake brownies. Few things will get your kids to put down their iPads faster than brownies. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo by baking up a batch of these easy Foodnetwork.com Mexican Brownies. Fudgy, chewy and a bit spicy – upon the first bite you’ll know this brownie didn’t come out of a box.

6. Head for the border. We bet you deserve a get-a-way. Cinco de Mayo is the perfect excuse to head to a pampering resort in Mexico, or grab your friends and a bottle of tequila and head to a nearby town for a mini escape.

7. Pass the sombrero. This party game is perfect for stirring up family fun, and it’s equally amusing as a featured Mexican Cocktail Hour entertainment event.

Here’s how the game works: participants stand in a circle and pass the sombrero to one another their chin. No hands allowed. Participants are eliminated when they drop the sombrero and the winner is the last person standing. As a prize for their sombrero passing skill they get to keep the traditional hat.

8. Learn the lingo. Your family will get a kick out of learning some fun Spanish words like “gracias” (thank you), “fiesta” (party), and “de nada” (you’re welcome). Kick up the fun a notch by creating Spanish Word Bingo and turn Cinco de Mayo into family game night. Print-bingo.com lets you create custom bingo cards for free.

Cinco de Mayo is the perfect time to learn about Mexican and Mexican-American history. It’s also an ideal time to gather family or friends for a fiesta.
