October 2020 Remote Jobs Report

Virtual Vocations - October 2020 Remote Jobs Report

The Virtual Vocations October 2020 Remote Jobs Report analyzes current work-at-home and remote hiring trends, home-based employment statistics, online employment news, and Virtual Vocations company data for U.S. professionals actively applying to 100% virtual, flexible, or remote jobs.

October 2020 Remote Jobs Report

Our October 2020 Remote Jobs Report features our examination of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) “Employment Situation Summary” for September 2020 as well as Virtual Vocations company statistics from the same month.

During September 2020, Virtual Vocations surpassed July and August’s record-setting numbers and added more than 48,000 total remote jobs to the job board. In addition to the new company records set during recent months, when we compared the number of remote jobs added to the job board in September 2020 to those from September 2019, we found a 92.54% increase in the total number of available remote job openings.”

CEO Statement on Remote Hiring in September

We have enjoyed three record-breaking months at Virtual Vocations, but we are just as excited about what these positive hiring trends mean for the state of remote work and the U.S. economy as businesses bounce back from COVID-19 closures and shift their organizational strategies to include more partial and fully remote roles. It is exciting for me as a 100% virtual entrepreneur and telework advocate to witness more businesses adopt remote work as a practical, transformative solution to save money on overhead costs, recruit the best talent, and protect the health and lifestyle quality of their staff.”

—Laura Spawn, Virtual Vocations CEO and Co-Founder

BLS September Jobs Report Statistics - Virtual Vocations October 2020 Remote Jobs Report

Source: U.S. Department of Labor BLS, “THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION — SEPTEMBER 2020”

The U.S. economy added more than 660,000 non-farm jobs during September. While the total U.S. unemployment rate is still more than double (3.7%) the average unemployment rate for 2019, the BLS notes that the labor market is still recovering from business closures and job losses as a result of measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. High growth job categories for September included remote-friendly career sectors like the following:

Some government employment losses were evidenced in areas like state and local government education. These government employment declines are likely attributed to the end of U.S. Census survey promotions and budget reductions amid the lingering effects of the novel coronavirus. The unemployment rate went down for both men and women and the number of temporary layoffs decreased by 1.5 million.
