This is coming from the other side of the desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I run a recruitment agency that places virtual assistants with companies around the world, and over the last twelve months we processed 102,677 applications. That&#8217;s a real number, not a round one for effect. It works out to roughly one application every five minutes, around the clock, for a year. Out of all of them, we hired 145 people. But the interesting part was never how few people got hired. It was <em>why<\/em> the ones <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bryanrobinson\/2025\/07\/26\/risky-job-seekers-how-to-stand-out-and-snag-your-dream-career\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bryanrobinson\/2025\/07\/26\/risky-job-seekers-how-to-stand-out-and-snag-your-dream-career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">who did stood out<\/a>, because it&#8217;s almost never the thing applicants assume it is. After a year of watching this funnel move, here are five things I&#8217;d tell anyone chasing remote work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"1-1-speed-is-a-signal-and-slowness-works-against-you-\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Speed is a signal, and slowness works against you<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we invite someone to take a skills test, most of them disappear. Of everyone we asked to complete one, only about 15% actually sent it back. The other 85% just didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the ones who did submit told their own story through timing. Over half of them, 53%, turned it around inside 24 hours. Almost 96% within a week. After seven days, submissions basically flatline. Responding fast isn&#8217;t about looking eager or desperate. It reads as a quality signal whether you intend it to or not. The candidates who reply within a day are the ones who tend to go all the way through the process. I&#8217;m not telling you to rush and send garbage. These are people who applied, got told \u201cgreat, here&#8217;s a short task so we can see what you can do,\u201d and then went quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I stopped being surprised by it a while ago, but it still matters, because it&#8217;s the cheapest possible way to get ahead of the pack. Just finishing the thing puts you in front of most of your competition. Not finishing it brilliantly. A gorgeous resume with no follow-up loses to a plain one that completes every step. If you remember nothing else from this whole article, remember that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"3-3-what-you-can-do-beats-what-youve-done-\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. What you can do beats what you&#8217;ve done<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We score every skills test on a 1 to 5 scale, and these tests aren&#8217;t busywork. They mirror the real job. A bookkeeping candidate reconciles a messy account. A designer builds something to a brief. An automation specialist actually builds the automation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we compared the people we hired against everyone who took the test, the gap was enormous. The average applicant scored 2.78. The people we hired averaged 3.90. That&#8217;s roughly 42% higher, and it&#8217;s the single strongest predictor in our entire process. Stronger than years of experience. I&#8217;ve also watched impressive CVs collapse the moment there was an actual task on the table. So if you&#8217;re early in your career, or switching into something new, this is genuinely good news for you. Nobody fakes competence on a real task, and nobody can hide it either. Get good at the actual work, and it shows up in the one place that counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"4-4-being-specific-beats-being-a-generalist-\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Being specific beats being a generalist<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This one catches people off guard. You&#8217;d assume \u201cgeneral admin\u201d would be the easiest kind of role to land, since everyone can do a little of everything. It&#8217;s the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I split our roles into categories, the generic admin postings had the lowest hire rate of anything we run, around 0.08%. The specialized ones, a specific tool or a specific niche, came in around 0.24%. A vague \u201cvirtual assistant\u201d posting pulls in thousands of loosely qualified people, and you drown in that crowd. A posting for something specific pulls a smaller, sharper pool, and if you&#8217;re in it, you stand out almost immediately. \u201cI do admin\u201d is forgettable. \u201cI run Klaviyo email flows for Shopify stores\u201d is a person a client can actually picture hiring tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So pick a lane. One tool, one industry, one type of work you can genuinely go deep on. In a sea of generalists, the specialist wins, and it isn&#8217;t close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"5-5-your-age-and-your-timing-both-matter-more-than-youd-think-\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Your age and your timing both matter more than you&#8217;d think<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two quick ones to finish on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, age. There&#8217;s this myth that remote work is a young person&#8217;s game, and that past 40 you&#8217;ve somehow missed the boat. Our data says that&#8217;s nonsense. When we looked at who actually got hired versus who applied, the age spread was basically identical. Median age of our hires was 29. Median age of everyone who applied was also 29. People in their forties and fifties made it through at the same rate as people in their twenties. The filter is skill and follow-through, not the year you were born. If you&#8217;ve got real experience behind you, that&#8217;s an asset, especially for the specialized roles from point four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, timing, and this is a small tactical thing. But once you&#8217;re in, a lot of the hustle falls away. The client-finding, the contracts, the HR headaches. You trade some independence and some of the upside for steadiness and a team behind you. It suits people who&#8217;d rather do the work than spend half their week selling the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither one is \u201cbetter.\u201d They&#8217;re just different deals, and the right one comes down to what you actually want out of remote work. Plenty of people start on the platforms to build a track record, then move to an agency later for the stability. What doesn&#8217;t change is this: whichever path you pick, the five things above still decide whether you get hired. Speed, follow-through, real skill, a specific niche, and not tripping over your own timing. The filter stays the same.
