Job Summary
The Trust Accountant will be responsible for the recording and reporting of multiple trust bank accounts. This position will operate under the direction of the Treasury Supervisor. Responsibilities will also include ensuring that all trust accounting processes are undertaken in accordance with statutory requirements, while maintaining reporting and analyses of balances across all trust bank accounts on a daily basis, ensuring monies are transacted within appropriate deadlines. In addition, this position will provide backup support to the other accountants in the department and will assist on special projects as assigned.
Major Duties & Responsibilities:
Maintain multiple trust accounts to ensure accurate and complete accounting of transactions in accordance with specific regulatory requirements
Process and/or review all daily cash movement requests such as remittances, wire transfers, ACH transactions and disbursements by monitoring, updating and posting system registers
Hands on, daily recording of escrow related transactions and activities in the company system of record which will require close contact with state brokers and account managers.
Identify and research trust account discrepancies
Ensure proper handling of trust accounts and proper enforcement of escheat laws
Assist with the development of new processes, policies or procedures to advance the controls and accounting environment within trust accounting
Liaison with company accounting and finance staff to ensure that activity is being properly recorded into the company's books and records
Maintain database integrity and ensure accuracy of record keeping
Assist in creating trust reports and analyses
Provide support for the preparation of bank reconciliations
Partner with Accounting, Operations and Legal teams, as well as ensure that proper internal controls are in place for compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley
Knowledge and Skills Requirements:
Education:
BA or BS degree in Finance or Accounting
MBA strongly preferred
Experience:
3+ years related trust accounting experience in a public company with experience in real estate brokerage accounting a plus
Ability to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment and be hands-on
Positive and cooperative; have the ability to work with multiple teams, both internal and external with strong quantitative skills
Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Excel
Attention to detail and solid customer service instincts
