The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) tracks occupational employment data for consultants under the banner of “Management Analysts“—a major employment group. As of 2019, the BLS Employment Projection Program estimates 876,300 U.S. professionals work in the management analyst sector.

The agency predicts consultant recruiting will be high within industries like healthcare, information technology, and government. Growth is also expected for smaller consulting companies specializing in areas like business operations and human resources. All of these industries are concerned with maintaining privacy and security, mitigating high overhead costs, adhering to regulations, improving efficiency, and implementing regular process and equipment updates—all areas that could benefit from the work of experienced consultants.

Expected Education for Consulting Industry Professionals

Entry-level consultants are typically required to possess a bachelor’s degree; however, some employers prefer to hire candidates who have a master’s degree in business administration (MBA). “Job opportunities are expected to be best for those who have a graduate degree or a certification, specialized expertise, fluency in a foreign language, or a talent for sales and public relations,” according to the BLS.

Management analysts address a range of topics, and many fields of study provide a suitable educational background. Common fields of study include business, economics, finance, marketing, and psychology.

The Institute of Management Consultants USA (IMC USA) offers the Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation to those who meet minimum qualifications for experience and education. levels of education and experience and who complete other requirements.
