Remote Education Industry Overview
Since 2015, education has been one of the top telecommuting career fields applied to by Virtual Vocations members. The growing market for public and private online learning options at all levels of education has increased the demand for education-based remote jobs.
From 2018 to 2019, the number of available remote education jobs found in the Virtual Vocations job board grew by 47.70%.
Projected Education Industry Job Growth
The education industry can expect 5% job growth from 2018 to 2028, according to the BLS. This level of job growth is about as fast as average for all U.S. occupations.
“About 512,900 new jobs are projected to be added from 2018 to 2028. Enrollment is projected to increase at both the college and university level and among public elementary and secondary schools, therefore postsecondary teachers and preschool, elementary and secondary school teachers will be needed to meet the demand.”
However, the BLS also points out that the availability and longevity of education-based occupations are determined by federal, state, and local budgets. Lean budgeting periods can restrict employment growth in the education sector.
The BLS tracks projected job growth across several niche education roles. Listed below is a breakdown of how those remote-enabled education fields are expected to grow through 2028:
- Postsecondary Teachers: 11% growth (155,000 new jobs added)
- School and Career Counselors: 8% growth (27,200 new jobs added)
- Postsecondary Education Administrators: 7% growth (13,500 new jobs added)
- Preschool Teachers: 7% growth (36,900 new jobs added)

- Middle School Teachers: 3% growth (21,400 new jobs added)
- Special Education Teachers: 3% growth (13,600 new jobs added)
- Career and Technical Education Teachers: -1% decline (-1,800 jobs lost)

Support level education roles and teaching positions in preschools may be filled by qualified candidates with an associate’s degree or some college study accompanied by relevant work experience. Furthermore, education requirements vary based on the hiring institution as well as state requirements, which may include certifications, licenses, and a certain number of continued, annual professional development hours.

Remote Education Job Options
Full-time remote education professionals usually work 40 hours or more per week. Education professionals may also need to work in the evenings and on weekends in order to accommodate class schedules, especially if they work for a virtual school.
The type of employer will also impact the education professional’s calendar. While many K-12 and university education professionals work a standard 10-month school year, other education positions, like those in school administration and curriculum coordination, could be year-round positions. Remote teaching and telecommute tutoring jobs are also popular among educators who want to supplement their income with part-time, independent contracting opportunities.
