California Certified HIM Coding Specialist

Job Summary

To support a growing healthcare organization, the full-time California Certified HIM Coding Specialist will translate healthcare providers' diagnostic and procedural statements into coded form, ensuring compliance and optimizing reimbursement while working remotely.

Key responsibilities

• Codes and abstracts diagnoses and patient information from outpatient ancillary encounters and enters data into the hospital information system
• Verifies the accuracy and completeness of abstracted hospital information fields based on paper medical records
• Communicates with physicians or physician office staff to clarify unclear or insufficient documentation for coding

Required qualifications

• Certified Coding Associate (CCA) or Certified Professional Coder Associate (CPC-A) certification from AHIMA or AAPC
• High School diploma or equivalent
• Completion of coding training including anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and basic ICD 10-CM/PCS and CPT coding
• Preferred: One year of experience in a medical-related setting
• Ability to operate a code-finder
