Job Summary
To support the Duke Cancer Institute, the remote Certified Oncology Data Specialist will abstract and code medical data from electronic medical records, ensuring compliance with state and national cancer registry standards while participating in ongoing education and development of coding policies.
Key responsibilities:
- Abstract a wide range of medical data related to cancer diagnosis and treatment from electronic medical records
- Ensure compliance with Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards and participate in the development of coding policies
- Maintain knowledge of anatomy, medical terminology, and coding guidelines, while independently resolving complex coding issues
Required qualifications:
- Associate degree in Cancer Registry Management or Health Information Management preferred
- Two years of experience as an Oncology Data Specialist or Cancer/Tumor Registrar preferred
- Oncology Data Specialist certification required
- Proficiency in Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards, ICD-10 Coding, and SEER staging
- Familiarity with Oncology Registry software and electronic medical record systems, such as EPIC
