Job Summary

To support the Duke Cancer Center Institute, the full-time Certified Oncology Data Specialist will abstract and code medical data from electronic medical records (EMR) in compliance with state and national data standards, while working remotely from specified states.

Key responsibilities
  • Abstract and code a wide range of medical data, including patient history, diagnostic findings, treatment details, and follow-up outcomes
  • Ensure compliance with Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards and participate in the development of coding policies
  • Maintain knowledge of anatomy, medical terminology, and coding guidelines while solving complex coding problems
Required qualifications
  • Associate degree in Cancer Registry Management or Health Information Management preferred
  • Two years of experience as an Oncology Data Specialist or Cancer/Tumor Registrar preferred
  • Certification as an Oncology Data Specialist is required
  • Proficiency in Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS), ICD-10 Coding, and SEER staging
  • Working knowledge of Oncology Registry software and EPIC EMR
