Job Summary
Supporting NOAA Fisheries' Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office, the full-time remote Fisheries Gear Specialist will engage with the commercial fishing industry to create and test gear modifications, conduct field studies, and provide outreach on proper gear installation to mitigate bycatch of protected species.
Key responsibilities
- Participate in field studies and data analysis to evaluate solutions for reducing sea turtle and marine mammal bycatch
- Collaborate with regional teams on projects aimed at minimizing bycatch in fixed gear fisheries
- Conduct outreach and dockside demonstrations on appropriate gear installation and compliance monitoring
Required qualifications
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in fisheries or environmental science
- A bachelor's or master's degree in environmental science or a related discipline, with relevant experience substitutable for education
