Plain English Specialist

Job Summary

To enhance the clarity and usability of International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs), the part-time consultant Plain English Specialist will apply plain language principles to draft ISPM texts, review and provide recommendations, and prepare reports while working remotely for a duration of 60 non-consecutive days.

Key responsibilities

• Review draft ISPMs and apply plain-language principles to improve clarity and usability
• Provide evidence-based recommendations and prepare reports summarizing observations and challenges
• Collaborate with Expert Working Groups to ensure compliance with FAO standards and guidelines

Required qualifications

• Advanced university degree in communications, professional writing, linguistics, or a related field
• Minimum of five years of experience applying plain language principles to scientific or regulatory documents
• Working knowledge (level C) of English
• Familiarity with international standards and regulatory texts
• Strong analytical, editorial, and report-writing skills
