Principal Systems Engineer
Job Summary
To ensure the reliability and scalability of the database fleet, the full-time remote Principal Systems Engineer will set the technical direction for GitHub's database platform, drive architectural strategy, and collaborate with engineering teams on database-related initiatives.
Key responsibilities
- Set the technical direction and multi-year architectural strategy for the database platform
- Own replication topology, failover automation, and manage database components for optimal performance
- Lead capacity planning for the database fleet and participate in on-call rotations to respond to incidents
Required qualifications
- 11+ years of experience in Software Engineering or related technical discipline with proven software coding experience in languages such as C, C++, Java, or Python
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related field with 7+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent experience
- Deep expertise with MySQL internals and experience with database sharding in production
- Strong experience writing production software in Go, Python, Ruby, or Rust
- Experience with Microsoft Azure or equivalent cloud providers and familiarity with managed database offerings
