Job Summary

Context:
APOPO is an award-winning global nonprofit that deploys African giant pouched rats, widely known as HeroRATs, to detect landmines and tuberculosis in affected countries across the world. APOPO also researches and develops other applications for detection rats like anti-wildlife trafficking, search and rescue, and early detection of disease.

Due to the unique and one of a kind appeal of our HeroRATs , APOPO has an extremely unique and well know brand for a nonprofit of its size, receives tremendous attention from major global media outlets, and has a relatively engaged and large social media following. APOPO already earns well over $600,000 a year in online donations, with over $300,000 coming from its flagship online HeroRAT adoption program.

APOPO has accomplished this with very little in house digital marketing expertise and a limited digital marketing budget and strategy. APOPO believes a talented and experienced digital marketer could leverage APOPO's unique brand and high levels of media attention, and significantly increase its online revenue. The majority of APOPO's online support currently comes from the US, and APOPO is seeking a DMM with expertise in the US market, but also experience with/ an ability to learn the European market The DMM can be based in one of APOPO's 10 global offices or work remotely.

About your new role:
The DMM will be responsible for building APOPO's online audience, and then converting that audience into engaged and loyal donors. The DMM will work under APOPO's CEO's and is supported directly by a European based British assistant who handles the majority of direct one on one online donor interactions, and a communication staff with strong content and graphic design capabilities. Given the current make up of APOPO's staff, a proven track record with analytical based digital marketing is more important than digital content creation expertise, though both are strongly desired.


Key Responsibilities:
Plan and execute successful public fundraising campaigns and marketing activities that raise brand awareness, build online communities, and ultimately drive online HeroRAT adoptions and other forms of online support and donations
Maintain and improve APOPO's social media networks, website donation pages, online payment system, and donor dashboards and databases
Evaluate, improve and position APOPO core online donation products, principally its online HeroRAT adoption, but also APOPO's HeroGifts, HeroRAT merchandise, and standard donation offerings
Justify and then experiment with a digital marketing budget to maximize new donor acquisition
Work collaboratively with the European assistant to ensure industry standard or better rates of online donor retention

Key Qualifications and competencies
At least a Bachelor's degree in a related subject (longer experience can offset a lower qualifications)
A 5-year proven track record in conceiving, developing, and executing digital marketing of a product, service, or donor experience
Understanding of basic design and digital content for marketing
Thorough knowledge of monitoring tools and software such as Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, Heat-maps, etc., as well as the preparation of professional reports, KPIs and recommendations.
Understanding of donor oversight, management and retention through CRM databases and helpdesks
Website CMS experience
Understanding of US/ European audiences and excellent audience analysis skills
Understanding and experience of donation product pricing strategies
Marketing writing skills in Standard American English

Excellent marketing writing skills in Standard American English
Background in the aid sector or with digital marketing to animal and pet lovers
Experience marketing online adoption/ sponsorships for a nonprofit
Basic photography and video skills (including editing)

Remote or office based
