Founded in 2018, ExpatBuddy exists to empower expats to truly feel at home wherever they might be. With ExpatBuddy's free mobile app, expats can move to a new country and find a ready community of other expats to provide the support they need.
Most of us in the ExpatBuddy team are expats. We have witnessed first-hand how amazing, yet difficult, being an expat is. Living abroad is an amazing adventure that makes us grow and become much more well-rounded, complete people. On the other hand, it is extremely hard to move abroad, with culture shock, isolation, family stress, logistical challenges, and homesickness rearing their ugly heads.
What we found that made the expat experience measurably better is a community of other people who understand you and are ready, willing, and able to help you and your family. With ExpatBuddy, we use our machine-learning algorithm to match you with similar, like-minded expats who will serve to create a support community with you.

We are looking for a Head of Engineering, who will own and drive the strategy, execution, and recruiting for all ExpatBuddy's engineering efforts, from the app, to the recommendation engine, to the backend, to the website. The ideal candidate is an experienced engineering leader, understands online consumers and communities, and is hungry to take on leadership both internally and externally. This individual would be open to taking on a hands-on role initially, and ready to build out a team.

Responsibilities
Provide hands on technical leadership by developing and improving our technical systems, participating in technical design, and contributing to product strategy
Drive execution with a sense of urgency, collaborate with team members cross-functionally to set clear goals, and deliver against them
Build the engineering team - hire, manage, mentor, inspire, and retain software engineers
Work cross-functionally with our development agency and with our machine learning, design, and growth teams to speed up delivery and increase quality of the product and user experience
Work closely with the Co-Founders to set, track, and meet product and engineering goals
Partner with the business side to facilitate, manage, and prioritize a robust backlog and roadmap
Establish best practices and processes for development
Desired Skills
Familiarity with Cloud Technologies, MySQL, Firebase, PHP, Python, Reach Native, and Laravel
Experience building mobile apps
Experience building and growing high-performance teams from scratch
Excellent communication skills to collaborate with other team members
A strategic thinker who thrives when developing long-term strategy in addition to delivering technical execution
High integrity and demonstrated strong ability to identify, prioritize, and articulate highest impact initiatives.
Exceptional independent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, flexibility, and ability to collaborate with others in a fast-paced environment
Experience working on a consumer product
Open to engaging hands-on when needed (especially initially)
