Job Summary

To support the communications office at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the part-time Science Writer will be responsible for writing news releases and feature stories on scientific discoveries, conducting interviews, and ensuring the accuracy of written pieces in a fully remote capacity.

Key responsibilities

• Write and edit news releases and feature stories based on scientific research from Scripps Institution of Oceanography
• Research and conduct interviews to gather information, ensuring accuracy and adherence to AP style
• Compose materials for distribution to news media and other departmental publications

Required qualifications

• Experience writing engaging copy for diverse audiences, particularly in ocean, earth, and atmospheric sciences
• Thorough knowledge of issues in oceanography, geophysics, and marine biology
• Strong understanding of writing fundamentals, grammar, and editorial style guidelines
• Experience in research and fact verification related to scientific topics
• Familiarity with computer applications for publishing and web production
