Senior Data Scientist

Job Summary

To support rare disease research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the remote Senior Data Scientist will model biomedical knowledge, build retrieval-augmented services, and deliver user interfaces while managing the data layer and retrieval services for AI systems.

Key responsibilities:

• Model biomedical knowledge by ingesting disease and phenotype ontologies into PostgreSQL and reconciling identifiers across sources
• Build retrieval-augmented services that connect everyday language with clinical concepts, ensuring accurate term retrieval and disambiguation
• Deliver user interfaces using Next.js, React, and TypeScript, covering question flows, result presentation, and system status updates

Required qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Informatics, or a related field; advanced degree preferred
• At least 5 years of experience building and operating production software or data systems, with 2 years focused on LLM-powered applications
• Experience in end-to-end retrieval system development, including indexing and query construction
• Proficiency in Python, PostgreSQL, and familiarity with Kubernetes and containerization
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Security clearance
