Job Summary
To support the operational transition and development of NOAA's Warn-on-Forecast Systems, the full-time remote Senior Scientific Application Programmer will develop, integrate, and optimize scientific software and workflows for high-performance numerical weather prediction systems.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, integrate, test, and optimize scientific software for the cloud-based WoFSv1 system
- Design and maintain workflows that encompass model preprocessing, data assimilation, forecasting, and product generation
- Conduct verification, benchmarking, and performance evaluation to ensure operational readiness and forecast skill
Required qualifications
- M.S. or higher in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
- Experience in software development and code management using GitHub
- Knowledge of Numerical Weather Prediction modeling and atmospheric physics
- Strong proficiency in Fortran and Python, particularly for scientific applications
- Experience in cloud High Performance Computing environments is highly desired
