Staff Software Engineer

Job Summary

As a full-time Staff Software Engineer on the API Gateway Team, the successful candidate will define the technical strategy and architecture for traffic management at GitHub, driving cross-team initiatives and mentoring engineers in a remote work environment.

Key responsibilities

• Define the multi-year technical strategy and system architecture for the API Gateway and traffic management
• Author architectural decisions and lead design reviews to establish defaults adopted across multiple engineering groups
• Lead cross-group reliability efforts to improve incident management and design telemetry for systemic outage prevention

Required qualifications

• 9+ years of experience in Software Engineering or a related technical discipline with proven production software delivery in multiple programming languages
• 4+ years of experience building and supporting large, high-traffic applications at scale within platform/infrastructure domains
• 3+ years of experience leading cross-team technical initiatives and mentoring engineers
• Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud
• Exceptional written communication skills for authoring technical documents and influencing decisions
