VHA Contract Coder

Job Summary

Serving as a working lead, the part-time Lead VHA Contract Coder will oversee outpatient and inpatient facility coding, conduct audits, and provide mentorship to the coding team while working remotely for the VA Portland Health Care System.

Key responsibilities

• Perform outpatient and inpatient facility coding, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and timely completion of cases
• Conduct coding audits and provide feedback to team members, tracking quality trends and reporting metrics
• Serve as the primary point of contact for coding inquiries and mentor coders transitioning into VA/VHA coding environments

Required qualifications

• Active coding credential from AHIMA or AAPC, maintained throughout the contract
• Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT/HCPCS, DRG assignment, and E&M guidelines
• Minimum of 3 years of VHA facility coding experience, including recent lead or supervisory experience
• Experience conducting coding audits and providing constructive feedback
• Familiarity with VA systems and compliance with HIPAA/VA directives
