VHA Contract Coder

Job Summary

Serving as a working lead, the part-time Lead VHA Contract Coder will oversee outpatient and inpatient facility coding, conduct audits, and provide mentorship to coding team members while working remotely for the VA Portland Health Care System.

Key responsibilities

• Perform outpatient and inpatient facility coding, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and timely completion of cases
• Conduct coding audits and provide feedback to team members, tracking quality trends and ensuring production meets contract standards
• Serve as the primary point of contact for coding-related inquiries and mentor coders transitioning into VA/VHA coding environments

Required qualifications

• Active coding credential from AHIMA or AAPC, maintained throughout the contract
• Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT/HCPCS, DRG assignment, and E&M guidelines
• Minimum of 3 years of VHA facility coding experience, including recent lead or supervisory experience
• Experience in conducting coding audits and delivering constructive feedback
• Experience mentoring or training other coders
