As an online academic translator, you translate pieces of academic writing from one language to another. This is a highly specialized position. You not only need advanced language skills, but you also need to be familiar with the academic field in which you translate. Employers expect you to have near-native fluency in two or more languages, but depending on the field, they may prefer you to have a degree in the specific field over a degree in the language. If you work as a freelance translator, there is no shortage of remote work. If you work for a university, you may need to work out of an onsite office, but there is usually some flexibility. While experience is helpful, language skills and technical knowledge are more important.

To succeed as an online academic translator, you need strong language skills. You also need experience with academic writing in case you have to make a decision on wording when there is no direct translation. Current job offerings include Virtual Bilingual Korean Academic Translator, Virtual Chinese to English Academic Translator, and Remote Bilingual Translator.
