Certified Medical Coder
Job Summary
To support the HIM Hospital Coding team, the full-time Certified Medical Coder will review, abstract, and assign medical codes for professional services, ensuring compliance with regulations while working remotely.
Key responsibilities
- Assigns ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes accurately and productively, including codes for chronic conditions impacting HCCs
- Reviews coding edits and applies necessary changes to code assignments, ensuring compliance with coding regulations
- Utilizes software tools to compile and validate medical information, providing guidance to healthcare staff on coding practices
Required qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; higher-level degree may substitute
- Certification from AHIMA or AAPC is required
- At least 12 months of experience in hospital coding
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM and HCPCS/CPT coding
- Successful completion of the UNC HCS Hospital Outpatient Coder Proficiency Test
