Certified Medical Coder II

Job Summary

To support the coding department, the full-time Certified Medical Coder II will perform technical and administrative tasks including reviewing, abstracting, and assigning medical codes (CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10) while ensuring compliance with regulations in a remote work environment.

Key responsibilities

• Accurately assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and HCPCS/CPT codes for chronic conditions and procedures
• Review coding edits and apply necessary changes to code assignments, ensuring compliance with coding regulations
• Provide guidance to healthcare staff on current coding practices and assist in resolving coding-related inquiries

Required qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; higher-level degree may be accepted
• Certification from AHIMA or AAPC is required
• At least 12 months of experience in hospital coding
• Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM and HCPCS/CPT coding
• Successful completion of the UNC HCS Hospital Outpatient Coder Proficiency Test
