Director of Software Engineering

Job Summary

Leading a distributed team of approximately 40 engineers and managers, the full-time salaried Director of Software Engineering will develop and execute a long-term strategy for Elasticsearch's distributed systems, focusing on performance, scalability, and reliability in a serverless context.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute engineering strategy aligned with product direction and business objectives
• Drive improvements in performance, scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency for Elasticsearch's core distributed architecture
• Lead, mentor, and develop engineering managers and senior technical leaders while fostering a culture of collaboration and technical excellence

Required qualifications

• Proven track record of leading large-scale engineering organizations and managing engineering managers
• Hands-on software engineering experience with substantial technical depth in distributed systems
• Extensive experience in designing and operating complex, large-scale distributed systems
• Strong understanding of distributed systems concepts, including concurrency, consistency, and fault tolerance
• Experience in establishing engineering strategy and delivering complex initiatives across multiple teams
