Inpatient Coding Specialist

Job Summary

To enhance coding quality and compliance, the full-time remote Inpatient Coding Specialist will review and analyze complex clinical documentation to accurately assign diagnosis and procedure codes while serving as a technical resource for education and mentoring within the organization.

Key responsibilities

• Reviews complex inpatient medical records to assign accurate codes and determines principal diagnoses and secondary conditions
• Applies MS-DRG and APR-DRG methodologies to ensure accurate reimbursement and quality outcomes
• Educates providers and team members on coding rules and best practices while supporting coding audits and quality assurance activities

Required qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; completion of formal coursework in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and medical coding principles from an accredited program
• Two years of inpatient medical coding experience, including high complexity cases
• Advanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, MS-DRG/APR-DRG methodologies, and quality reporting concepts
• One of the following certifications: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or CIC
• Proficiency with electronic health records and coding systems
