Legal Subject Matter Expert
Job Summary
To support AI training and model development, the remote Legal Subject Matter Expert (SME) will manage legal oversight, develop knowledge architectures, and validate datasets while working flexibly as an independent contractor for a project duration of three months with potential for extension.
Key responsibilities
- Serve as the primary legal authority during the training and fine-tuning of AI models, ensuring adherence to legal standards
- Develop knowledge bases, legal taxonomies, and ontologies reflecting multi-jurisdictional standards
- Annotate, label, and validate datasets with specific legal knowledge, including case law and contractual clauses
Required qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) or Master of Laws (LLM) from an accredited law school; active bar membership is a plus
- 5 years of experience in the legal sector, such as private practice or in-house counsel
- Proven ability to translate complex legal processes into structured logic and data requirements
- Familiarity with legal tech stacks, including CLM and eDiscovery platforms
- Awareness of ethical Generative AI practices, including bias detection and responsible data usage
