Senior Backend Software Engineer
Job Summary
To enhance Affirm's data infrastructure, the remote Senior Backend Software Engineer will architect, build, and scale relational and distributed SQL databases while automating operations and improving mission-critical systems.
Key responsibilities
- Build and operate the control plane for large-scale distributed SQL databases, automating provisioning, failover, backups, and upgrades
- Design and execute reliability-focused schema and data migrations across multi-tenant database clusters with zero downtime
- Own the networking stack connecting services to storage on Kubernetes, optimizing for latency, resilience, and failover
Required qualifications
- 5+ years of experience as a software engineer
- Proficiency in backend technologies such as Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, Terraform, and Kubernetes
- Hands-on experience with large-scale database deployments in production environments
- Expertise in distributed databases and technologies like MySQL, TiDB, and Postgres
- Experience with zero-downtime migrations and major version upgrades on production databases
