Wildland Fire Risk Scientist

Job Summary

Focusing on advancing wildfire risk research, the full-time Wildland Fire Risk Scientist will provide scientific support to the USGS team, utilizing expertise in remote sensing, GIS, statistical analysis, and science communication, with the opportunity to work remotely within the U.S.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct research on wildfire exposure and risk to buildings and the wildland-urban interface to inform risk assessments and mitigation strategies
• Develop and publish journal articles related to wildfire exposure prediction and damage assessment using simulation models and machine learning
• Maintain and expand datasets quantifying building losses from wildfires and analyze global-scale datasets mapping the Wildland Urban Interface

Required Qualifications

• PhD or advanced degree in ecology, fire science, or a related field, with 3-5 years of relevant experience in fire ecology
• Advanced understanding of fuel types and their effects on wildland fire behavior
• Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and image processing
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and R for model development and data analysis
• Ability to lead and co-author scientific manuscripts for high-impact journals
