About Indiana

Situated near the center of the present-day United States, Indiana is known as the “Crossroads of America.” The state has historically served as an important hub for explorers heading west and fur traders traveling between Canada and New Orleans. Today, Indiana still serves as a major U.S. transportation center with Indianapolis, the state’s largest city, situated at the crossroads of major interstates and home to several major trucking firms. In addition to auto-related manufacturing, Indiana is home to a few major food brands including Orville Redenbacher popcorn and Wonder Bread.

“I don’t know what it is about Hoosiers, but wherever you go there is always a Hoosier doing something very important there.” – Kurt Vonnegut, author

  • The cost of living in Indiana is lower than the national average with budget-friendly housing prices leading the way, in addition to healthcare, groceries, utilities, and transportation.
  • Although relatively affordable, housing prices are expected to increase at a near-record pace in 2020 due to low inventory and high demand.
  • The state’s top five industries are manufacturing; real estate and rental and leasing; educational services, healthcare and social assistance; professional and business services; and finance and insurance.
  • Around 9% of the state’s non-farm workforce is employed in manufacturing, almost double the national average despite a decline of 1.5% over the past year, due primarily to trade wars.

Indiana Mean Wages

According to the most recent statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the hourly mean wage in Indiana is $21.77 and the annual mean wage is $45,290. This is lower than the national averages of $24.98 per hour and $51,960 annually. Between 2018 and 2019, Marion County had the highest average weekly wage among the state’s large counties at $1,232, followed by Hamilton County at $1,132 with the national average at $1,184.

Although the tight labor market is causing wages to slowly rise, over the past 15 years, wages across the U.S. have risen faster than wages in Indiana. This is perhaps due to lags in the state’s educational attainments. Vanderburgh County had the largest percentage increase in average weekly wages, up 8.2% from the first quarter of 2018 to the first quarter of 2019, followed by Lake County at 2.7%. Nationally, the average weekly wage increased by 2.8%.
