To create our Top 10 Cities for Remote Work in 2021 list, we utilized a weighted importance scoring model format to rank locations based on nine evaluation points we determined to be factors that remote workers and remote jobseekers would find favorable to city living. These factors include elements like the prevalence of remote jobs in the area, access to high-speed internet, and the total tax burden for the state in which each city is located. that more than half of TIME’s most influential companies are remote enabled.

In April 2021, TIME magazine published its inaugural list of the most influential companies. The “TIME100 Most Influential Companies” ranking, which is an expansion of the TIME100 list franchise that includes the magazine’s buzzworthy “Most Influential People” list, honors “businesses making an extraordinary impact around the world.”

Impressed by TIME’s new business list, the Virtual Vocations team was curious about which of the top 100 companies are not only influential but also remote enabled. We compared TIME’s list against the Virtual Vocations Remote Companies Database—a storehouse of more than 20,000 researched profiles of businesses that offer remote work options—and found that more than half of TIME’s most influential companies are remote enabled.

The Virtual Vocations 2021 Career Confidence Survey was developed as a component of our annual Remote Work Week campaign celebrating virtual employment and the flexibility it provides professionals who want to take more control over their lives and work. This year, in addition to developing the Career Confidence Survey, we celebrated our sixth annual Remote Work Week event with the launch of our new Remote Career Center—a remote jobseeker hub featuring more than 40 expert resources curated to help jobseekers improve their online job searches, hireability, and career success.

Our Career Confidence Survey was open to all Virtual Vocations members. Over a six-day period we received 1,158 survey responses from adults either currently working from home, actively searching for remote jobs, or at least interested in telecommuting opportunities and flexible employment.

Virtual Vocations shares its 2019 Year-End Report and Remote Jobs Statistics. This is the company’s fifth annual statistical analysis of the top industries, states, and companies for remote jobs.

The report also contains details about company records broken in 2019, a survey of Virtual Vocations job board growth over the last five years, national remote work statistics, and a demographic profile of a typical remote worker—as determined by multiple Virtual Vocations surveys—including remote work preferences and experience levels by generation.

In October 2019, Virtual Vocations conducted a voluntary survey of professionals interested or currently working in remote jobs. More than 4,600 survey responses were submitted for review and analysis. Virtual Vocations has learned which remote work benefits are most valuable to current telecommuters as well as professionals considering entering the telecommuting job force.

The 2018 Telecommuting Statistics and Virtual Vocations Year-End Report is our fourth such examination of annual telecommuting statistics, trends, and remote job outlooks. We believe in utilizing this data to help us determine how we can best assist our users in their searches for telecommuting and virtual jobs in the year ahead, as well as to provide a resource for anyone interested in learning more about the world of remote work and the current state of telecommuting.


Every year Virtual Vocations posts thousands of telecommuting jobs across all U.S. states. However, some states tend to be more conducive to remote work than others. In our list of Top 20 Remote Work States in 2018, we name the year’s best states for telecommuting and virtual work. 

Overall, jobseekers want more flexibility in their schedules and turn to telecommuting as a solution. Here are a few notable statistics from the survey:

  • 44.2% of telecommuters have been working remotely for at least five years
  • 65.4% of telecommuters work in a designated home office
  • 42.7% of telecommuters are parents or caregivers
