About Vermont

Famous for its maple syrup, quaint New England villages, artisanal products, and autumn foliage, Vermont is a northern state welcoming to not only nature and outdoor enthusiasts, but also visitors craving a strong cultural and artistic atmosphere. As the least populous state in New England, agriculture plays a substantial role in Vermont’s identity. With more than 7,000 farms in the state, dairy farming is the primary source of agricultural production. It is the epicenter of a growing community of food and farm entrepreneurs, so it’s no surprise Vermont is the home of Ben & Jerry’s, Green Mountain Roasters, King Arthur Flour, and many farm-to-table restaurants.

For visitors searching for a more metropolitan experience, Vermont is the perfect place to spend time exploring history and appreciating art. With a bountiful array of historical sites and a plethora of festivals, circus arts, community fairs, museums, theaters, sculpture parks, and galleries, the state always has something to do during a weekend getaway or a weekday adventure. If you’re looking for a change of scenery and the big city lights of Burlington beckon or the quaint beauty of Montpelier or Stowe call, consider taking an exploratory vacation to this beautiful state. This unique location offers a little bit of something for everyone.

“I’m from Vermont, where to be stylish and cool is to have a dirty pair of hiking boots and know how to change a tire, hang drywall, and bale hay. Those people are my home, and every time I come home, it reminds me that there’s something to be said for being in the spotlight, but it can never be a whole part of me” – Grace Potter, singer/songwriter

Remote Work Incentives in Vermont

Visitors to Vermont desiring to work remotely will find a government open and hungry to increase the number of remote workers residing in the New England state. There are two programs designed specifically for remote jobseekers and aimed at encouraging state residency.

In 2018, the Vermont legislature established the Remote Worker Grant Program. This incentive program provides full-time remote workers employed by out-of-state companies up to $10,000 over two years to move to Vermont and work virtually. The state distributes awards on a first-come, first-served basis. And although this program has already awarded all of the funds allocated to it for 2020, the Agency of Commerce and Community Development and the Legislature is considering providing additional funding to continue the program.

The New Worker Relocation Grant Program is another program designed to encourage workers to move to Vermont to work for Vermont-based companies. Participants in the program must be a new full-time resident in the state and full-time employee in a Vermont business and may be reimbursed up to $7,500 for relocation expenses. To qualify, applicants must have moved to Vermont on or after January 1, 2020.

Vermont Coworking Centers for Remote Work

One of the many benefits of telecommuting is the ability to work in the comfort and privacy of your own home. For workers who thrive working in solitude instead of a crowded office, this can be a strong incentive to transition to a telecommuting lifestyle. However, too much of a good thing can be counterproductive. With loneliness being one of the main difficulties that some remote workers experience, a coworking center can help alleviate this experience.

Designed to encourage collaboration and socialization between remote workers, these facilities offer a variety of amenities, including permanent or flexible “hot” desks, comfortable social spaces, conference rooms, and networking events for a variety of prices, subscriptions, and membership levels. Some coworking spaces also offer daily rates and provide traditional office supplies and equipment and non-traditional perks such as exercise facilities and onsite pet sitting. Coworking centers also offer temporary business space, free from the distractions that may arise at home, for remote workers looking to have the best of both worlds.

Smaller towns and rural areas have also discovered that remote work opens more doors for career advancement. To help combat the dwindling number of young professionals unwilling to establish roots in their hometowns, these areas have established coworking spaces hoping to entice workers to stay instead of leaving for brighter career prospects in bigger cities.
