Remote Work Incentives in West Virginia
West Virginia does not currently have any direct government grants or incentives specifically for remote work. However, the state does offer some tax credits that may inspire employers to invest in the state and increase the number of telecommute-friendly jobs available to West Virginians.
The Economic Opportunity Tax Credit aims to establish employment opportunities in West Virginia. Qualified businesses include those engaged in certain activities, such as information processing, non-retail goods distribution, qualified research and development, or destination-oriented recreation and tourism. The employer must create at least 20 new jobs within specified time limits. This tax credit can offset up to 80 percent of the corporate net income tax and personal income tax.
The Small Business Tax Credit enables eligible small businesses to receive a tax credit just as the general Economic Opportunity Tax Credit does. In this case, the small business must create at least 10 new West Virginian jobs within 12 months to qualify. Small businesses can use this tax credit as an incentive to establish new jobs.
The Jobs Creation Tax Credit enables qualified businesses to create less than 20 new jobs for a regular business and less than ten new jobs for qualified small businesses to receive a tax credit of up to $3,000 per year. To qualify, the employer must pay a minimum salary of $33,250 and offer health benefits.
