Virtual Vocations - September 2020 Remote Jobs Report

The Virtual Vocations September 2020 Remote Jobs Report analyzes current work-at-home hiring trends, telework statistics, telecommuting employment news, and Virtual Vocations company data for U.S. professionals actively applying to flexible, 100% virtual, and remote jobs.

September 2020 Remote Jobs Report

Our September 2020 Remote Jobs Report features our examination of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) “Employment Situation Summary” for August 2020 as well as Virtual Vocations company statistics from the same month.

During August 2020, Virtual Vocations surpassed July’s record-setting numbers and added more than 43,000 total remote jobs to the job board. In addition to the new company records set during recent months, when we compared the number of remote jobs added to the job board in August 2020 to those from August 2019, we found a 67% increase in the total number of available remote job openings.”

CEO Statement on Remote Hiring in August

We have enjoyed two record-breaking months at Virtual Vocations, but we are just as excited about what these positive hiring trends mean for the state of remote work and the U.S. economy as businesses bounce back from COVID-19 closures and shift their organizational strategies to include more partial and fully remote roles. It is exciting for me as a 100% virtual entrepreneur and telework advocate to witness more businesses adopt remote work as a practical, transformative solution to save money on overhead costs, recruit the best talent, and protect the health and lifestyle quality of their staff.”

BLS Jobs Report Analysis for Remote Workers

“In August…the unemployment rate declined to 8.4%, and the number of unemployed persons fell by 2.8 million to 13.6 million.”

August was another positive month for U.S. employment with the unemployment rate falling another 1.8%. This marks four consecutive months of employment growth since the COVID-19 pandemic brought about the lowest employment numbers ever in the U.S. However, the unemployment rate is still sharply higher than it was in February (4.9%) pre-pandemic.

Unemployment rates improved for both men and women. Additionally, the number of professionals who experienced a temporary layoff decreased by more than 3.1 million during August. An increase in government employment largely reflected temporary hiring for the 2020 Census. Employment gains were also present in remote-friendly labor sectors like professional and business services, healthcare, and education.
