Attitude affects everything. Your job is no exception.
A positive attitude in the workplace can accelerate your career. A negative attitude, however, can ruin it. To help you achieve work bliss, here are some of our favorite tips for maintaining a positive attitude at work.
Remember you have a choice. The first thing to remember is that your attitude is your choice and no one else’s. We’ve all had hard times, frustrations at work, hurt feelings, and discouraging conversations. The important thing to remember is that it’s how you respond to situations – not what’s happened to you – that determines your attitude. Your inner dialogue has the power to fuel your outlook on things. Next time you see yourself going down a road of negativity, change your inner dialogue to a positive tone.
Watch the words you use. Once they are uttered, words cannot be taken back. If you find yourself in a situation where you’re saying disparaging and judgmental things about those around you, stop and change your words. The path to success is paved by what you say and what others hear from you.
Smile more. When someone asks me how I’m doing, I always respond with something positive even if I’m not feeling positive at that moment. By responding with a positive answer and a smile, my attitude can be transformed. If you’ve noticed, when someone smiles at you, it’s pretty hard not to return the gesture. Sharing positive energy helps everyone’s mood improve around the office.
Get exercise. Few things help alleviate my frustration faster than exercise. Take all of those feelings of frustration out on the treadmill, the dance floor, or in the weight room. You will be surprised at how quickly your attitude can be improved with a little sweat and energy exertion.
Avoid the negative. Stay away from people who complain. The negativity that they project is
contagious. Surround yourself with people who make you feel good. When you’re forced to work with someone who has a bad attitude, focus on the work not the person. Communicate only about work, and don’t let them drag you down into their world of negativity.
Learn from past mistakes. If you’ve had some rough times and made mistakes, there’s no time like now to take an inventory of what you have learned. Stop thinking about how and why you made the mistake and move on. Success doesn’t depend on how many times you fall, but your attitude when you get up.
Having a positive attitude doesn’t mean living in a fantasy world. It’s only natural for life’s daily frustrations to get to you. That’s okay! The trick to maintaining a positive attitude is allowing yourself to feel the negative and then letting go of those feelings and focusing on the good. It takes practice, but making a conscious effort not to get bogged down with the deadlines and fatigue of work life will help you achieve the happiness you deserve.
