The majority of employees want fully remote jobs, but can workers earn enough to support themselves and their families while working from home full-time? Virtual Vocations investigated high paying remote companies that pay median workers at least $100,000 per year. These are the 15 best salaries for 2022.
Ranking High Paying Remote Companies
It’s no secret U.S. workers want to work from home. In fact, working fully from home—without any onsite responsibilities or field travel requirements—is the preferred work style of 70% of workers. Virtual careers are so desired by employees that having little to no access to remote jobs is their primary workplace concern, even ahead of inadequate salary or benefits and few opportunities for advancement.
Seeking higher levels of work-life balance or integration through employment in flexible, remote jobs, however, doesn’t mean home-based professionals must sacrifice other career goals, like boosts in income or career opportunities. To prove the top-level earnings possible via fully remote jobs with remote enabled companies, we examined a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report that analyzed 2021 median annual wages data for 450 U.S.-based companies.
John Stensholt and Nate Rattner of the WSJ used income source data from MyLogIQ and employee data from S&P Global Market Intelligence to prepare their findings. “Since about 2018, U.S. publicly traded companies have been required to identify the median worker from their global workforce and disclose that person’s compensation, including overtime and benefits,” according to Stenholt and Rattner. Their report found that median salaries of workers at the majority of big U.S. companies are higher than pre-pandemic levels. Plus, top median earners with these businesses brought home nearly $300,000 in 2021. These companies formed the foundation of our high paying remote companies investigation.
Key Findings from the WSJ Report
- The best median salaries from high paying remote companies range between $295,884 and $135,528.
- The average combined salary among the top 15 high paying remote companies is $202,827.
- Median salaries among eight of the top 15 high paying remote companies (53%) are more than $200,000 per year.
- Eleven of the top 15 companies (73%) experienced an increase in salaries from 2020.
- Six of the top 15 remote businesses with high paying salaries are tech companies; three are internet and ecommerce companies; three are pharmaceutical companies; two are social media companies; and one is a business services company.
- Fourteen of the 15 companies ranked are among the top 20% in pay for the companies’ respective industry.
- The average number of employees working for one of the top 15 high paying remote companies is 31,381.
In preparing our 2022 ranking of high paying remote companies, we compared the top companies for median salary from the WSJ report against our Remote Companies Database. This helped us determine which of the best-of businesses for wages are also remote enabled and regularly hire for remote jobs.

Although we’ve learned that access to remote job options is the primary factor driving career changes since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, money is still a top motivator.
“The U.S. has not experienced a minimum wage increase since 2009. While employees in 2022 need the work-life flexibility provided by telecommuting, amid rising inflation, recession fears, and a national unemployment rate that took two years to rebound from its April 2020 nosedive, they also need to support their families and save for their futures.
The good news is telecommuters do not have to sacrifice top dollar to work remotely on a full-time basis. For this this report on high paying remote companies, our goal was to learn not only which companies pay employees the best wages but also which businesses regularly hire fully remote workers. Jobseekers can then use this report as a guide for finding both flexibility and financial independence while working from home.”
