“Some companies have embraced the remote working environment brought on by the pandemic, while others are urging their employees to flock back to their expensive offices again. But how does this impact employee happiness?

Remote Work Is Linked to Happiness: Study of 12,455 Respondents

Tracking Happiness conducted a large-scale survey of more than 12,000 employees to help them better understand workplace happiness and factors that influence happiness at work. And it matters. According to Tracking Happiness’s data, more than a quarter (27%) of someone’s life happiness relates to their happiness at work. The company also found that overall workplace happiness among employees ranks at a 6.44 out of 10, but the happiest employees work remotely more often.

“Our data shows that employee happiness decreases as commute times increase. Average happiness scores at work are relatively stable up to a commute time of 60 minutes.” Beyond the one hour commute timeline, ratings of work happiness decline sharply. Happiness at work has also plummeted for workers who worked from home 100% of the time during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, but are now once again working onsite 100% of the time. Take a look at these additional statistics uncovered by the Tracking Happiness survey.

On average, respondents spent 45% of their time working remotely.

Virtual Vocations CEO and co-founder Laura Spawn encourages jobseekers to start applying now to remote job openings, whether they are just entering the job market, seeking a career change, or aiming to earn supplemental income. “The remote job market is thriving this summer, strengthened by the U.S. unemployment rate returning to its February 2020 level and an absence of the typical summer hiring dip we tend to see as workers take annual vacations and gear up for back-to-school.” Spawn suggests starting August job searches with booming remote career options like engineering and development, telehealth, and advertising.

June 2022 Remote Hiring Summary

“Throughout summer and moving into fall, jobseekers should feel confident about the state of remote work in the U.S.”

Virtual Vocations - Virtual Employment Trends - July 2022 Remote Jobs Report - Remote Work Statistics & Trends

In addition to sharing her optimism on the state of remote work, Virtual Vocations CEO Laura Spawn also discussed virtual employment trends we’ve witnessed so far this year. “Since February 2022, when we became a 100% virtual job board, our team has researched, screened, and posted more than 94,000 fully remote job openings to our database.” Spawn added, “During the second quarter of 2022, from April to June, we averaged 20,050 total remote job postings added to our job board per month.”

Remote Work Report Spotlight

“Americans are embracing flexible work—and they want more of it.”

A spring 2022 survey from McKinsey & Company and Ipsos found that U.S. workers are not only embracing flexible work arrangements but that they want even more of them. This is McKinsey’s third “American Opportunity Survey,” which provides data on how flexible work fits into the lives of U.S. professionals.

Nearly two-and-a-half years since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the work from home experiment has transformed into something different, according to McKinsey: “…new working norms that acknowledge that flexible work is no longer a temporary pandemic response but an enduring feature of the modern working world.”

The American Opportunity Survey

For its survey, McKinsey partnered with Ipsos to poll 25,000 Americans as a representative cross section of U.S. Workers. Among respondents looking for a job, 21% cited flexible working arrangements, like working remotely, as a top motivator—ahead of other motivators like heath insurance, more paid leave, and alignment with the company’s cultural values.

McKinsey also uncovered valuable insights into the level of access U.S. professionals have to remote job options in 2022. Most notably, the pandemic ramped up more frequent and long-term remote job options. Proving the permanent state of remote work, McKinsey’s survey revealed that nearly six in 10 U.S. professionals can work remotely at least one day per week.

When workers have the opportunity to work flexibly, 87% of them take it.

87 %

58% of U.S. workers say they can work from home at least part of the time.

58 %

42% of American professionals are not offered remote work opportunities.

42 %

35% of U.S. workers can participate in remote work on a full-time basis.

35 %

This data mirrors findings from our own “100% Remote Jobs Survey” from spring 2022. We found that nearly all professionals would prefer to work from home full-time without leaving home for work. In fact, only 6% of respondents did not prefer this work arrangement. Additionally, among our more than 500 respondents, the top workplace concern they have this year is limited access to remote job options (20%). If employers want to remain competitive and attractive to the best talent available, they must continue to provide long-term remote job options without onsite work stipulations.

BLS Jobs Report Data for June 2022

“Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 372,000 in June, and the unemployment rate remained at 3.6 percent,” according to the BLS. This is the fourth consecutive month with a 3.6% unemployment rate. As of June, 5.9 million Americans remain unemployed in the U.S. This figure is slightly higher than the February 2020 number of unemployed U.S. workers (5.7 million), which was prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S.

Image source: U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics

Throughout the month, 7.1% of U.S. workers telecommuted specifically due to the pandemic. This is a mild decrease in pandemic telework, which occurred at a rate of 7.4% in May. Speaking of telework, some of the highest total job gains for June occurred in these remote-friendly career categories. The BLS also published revisions of reported total jobs numbers for previous months. We noted two key changes among monthly jobs data calculated for 2022.
